Incorporation, they argue, is a singular/instantaneous event, provoked by a loss that for some reason cannot be acknowledged or communicated. Incorporation, in the sense developed by Abraham and Torok, is a compensation: “in order not to have to ‘swallow’ a loss, we fantasize swallowing (or having swallowed) that which has been lost” (Abraham and Torok 1972/1994, 126).
